Becky Shaw at Hayes Theater

Becky Shaw at Hayes Theater
“… a big box of fireworks fizzling and crackling from beginning to end!” – The New York Times

A newly-wed couple plays matchmaker and organizes a blind date for two acquaintances – what could possibly go wrong?

Gina Gionfriddo’s darkly comedic, hilarious hit play that sent critics and audiences reeling in 2008 is back – revived, feisty, and razor-sharp, and better than ever! It’s pulsating with cleverness and heart, pumping possible disaster around every corner – pretty much as with any relationship, whether it be lovers, parents and children, or within the individual; it’s oozing with ferociously funny dialogue, densely textured writing, complex characters and situations perfectly portrayed by a highly competent and talented cast; it’s exploding with tantalizing, unresolved questions; it’s bursting at the seams with laughs, gasps, and thoughts of whether you yourself shouldn’t take a break from dating – permanently – and it’s back on stage, making its Broadway debut at long last!

That’s right, New York – Gina Gionfriddo’s Pulitzer Prize finalist Becky Shaw is coming to the Hayes Theatre this season!

SYNOPSIS

A newly-wed couple, Andrew and Suzanna, sets up a blind date for their respective acquaintances – a vulnerable, seemingly emotionally damaged, yet manipulative temp Becky, and a rather cynical and affluent financial manager Max. With the date spiralling out of control, with rather disastrous, yet comedic consequences, Becky and Max, who really are not a perfect match, enter a crash-and-burn kind of relationship, while it is increasingly becoming clear that Andrew and Suzanna burnt their fingers. Both couples soon find themselves having to navigate the disastrous repercussions with plenty of unanswered questions, discoveries regarding the social, financial, and emotional responsibilities within relationships, and complex tension bubbling underneath the surface.

Becky Shaw is without a doubt the season’s most unique play, masterfully brought to life by director Trip Cullman – a hilariously witty must-see for theatregoers from all walks of life!

“It’s wise, complex and really very moving. Funny, too.” – Chicago Tribune
