Marjorie Prime at Hayes Theater

“A provocative and chilling family drama that packs a punch.” – Entertainment Weekly
What would happen if you are able to recreate a passed-on loved one with the help of artificial intelligence? What would you tell them, ask them, and share with them? How would you feel about the fact that artificial intelligence replaces their identity? What happens when that blurred line between a life lived and a life remembered is crossed?
This season Pulitzer Prize finalist Jordan Harrison’s dramatic science-fiction family drama is posing questions about the ethical and moral dilemmas related to the use of artificial intelligence – even for healing, even with the best of intentions – directly to New York audiences. Critics have hailed the play as “sparkling, richly spare, heart-achingly beautiful, and sardonically funny, yet unsettling”; audiences walk away contemplating weighty questions; the tricky, yet relevant subject of the ghost in the machine is portrayed masterfully, dripping with vulnerability, poignancy, love, and pure, raw humanness; and memories of what was just experienced linger for a long time.
Brought to life by a star-studded cast, Marjorie Prime has many superpowers – sensitivity and tenderness, the human need to prolong the inevitable, an intense vulnerability, thought-provoking questions, a poignant reflection on aging, memory, mortality, life, and legacy. This rare theatrical gem, just like the Prime, says exactly what we need to hear, and must be seen by everybody. Consider yourselves immensely privileged, New York, because Jordan Harrison’s Marjorie Prime is now on at the iconic Hayes Theatre!

SYNOPSIS
Marjorie is an elderly lady whose memory of a life well-lived is starting to fade as a result of dementia. In an attempt to protect her wonderful memories of her late husband Walter, she is making use of an artificial intelligence hologram, a Prime, programmed to resemble her young husband. The Prime continues to collect information from Marjorie, and reminisces with her about their life together – the good and the bad.
Marjorie Prime is a poignant look into the human condition, and leaves the audience with the question: can artificial intelligence ease grief, or complicate it?
“Brilliant, startling and profound. A play worth remembering.” – New York Magazine
